Sydney: Australia's capital in all but name
Sydney is the flagship of the Australian economy, accounting for a quarter of its national output. While a bit distant from Europe and the US, with flights lasting over twenty hours common, this city is well-connected to the rest of the world through the Sydney Airport, which sees some 28 million passengers annually.
It's come a long way from its beginnings as a penal colony outpost. The iconic Sydney opera house, for instance, sits on the exact site of a former fort, which was built with convict labour. Sydney is one of the most multicultural places in the world, reflecting its appeal as a destination for tourists, immigrants into Australia, and expatriates.
With its quality of recreation, education and business facilities, excellent transport infrastructure and friendly climate, Sydney is one of the world's great cities, consistently placing among the top in most liveable and most sustainable city surveys. It has pioneered the global campaign for Earth Hour, when all lights in the CBD were shut down from 8 to 9 in the evening to highlight the potential role of cities in cutting humanity's carbon emissions through reduced power use.
Sydney's world-renowned harbour is actually the drowned remains of an extensive river valley, which explains its extremely indented coast that provides miles upon miles of prime waterfront, extending to its western suburbs. Other districts of the city are the North Coast, which became connected with the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Botany Bay to the south of the CBD.
Sample Sydney day tours
For maximum impact, head straight to the harbour, where most of the eye-candy attractions are. The great thing about Sydney is that the downtown's bright lights are just a few steps away from the Quay. Three days or so will allow you to see a good lot of what Sydney's got to offer, from dining to beach hopping, nature walks and shopping.

You can also go on a tour of Sydney's historical buildings, and for the price of one ticket you can visit heritage homes and estates, plus museums of the contemporary city and its colonial past.

Just outside central Sydney you can go on wine-tasting trips, wildlife parks or scuba diving. A guided bus tour can take you to Chinatown, the old town, botanical gardens, zoos and the harbour district in the course of one day.
